Cumbuco is a small fishing village situated about 25 kilometres (16 mi) North West from the city of Fortaleza, in the state of Ceara, along the north east coast of Brazil. The population is around 1600. The village is regarded as picturesque and scenic and is attracting both domestic and international tourism. Cumbuco has a beautiful and quiet beach near Fortaleza on one side of town and the famous sand dunes on the other side. There is a small and busy village centre built around the main square adjacent to the beach which has a fresh fish market, tropical palm trees several beach restaurants (barracas).

Facing onto the Atlantic Ocean, Cumbuco has perfect conditions for kitesurfing with mild air and ocean temperatures and strong and consistent South East trade winds from June to February. Sand dunes behind the village create a thermal effect and act to boost the wind speed.

In Cambuco there are more than 300 km of beaches in the State of Ceara, which are popular for practicing downwind trips and kite safaris.

The Wind : In Ceara state on the North East coast of Brazil the wind blows pretty much continually from June to February and its always from the South East. Cumbuco is located just south of the equator (3 degrees) and therefore is in the area of the southeastern trade winds. The many sand dunes bordering the coast thermally reinforce the southeast trade wind and adds around 5-6 knots more in strength.

A range of excellent accommodations in and around Cumbuco:

Cumbuco beach is one of the worlds most idyllic bays for kitesurfing.
The beach of Cumbuco has two main sections, the upwind bay stretches from Barraca Cumbuco Beach 4km downwind to the point where the Piranha Bar is. The centre of the village has Barraca’s all along the beach, its very narrow at high tide and there are lots of swimmers so its best to either kite upwind or down wind of this 1km stretch.
The best place to launch and land to kitesurf in the main bay of Cumbuco is a few meters downwind from Barracha Vellas. From here onwards you have 10kms of open empty beach and ocean to play in.
The shore dump can at high tide when there is a big swell reach 1m (only a few times a year, mainly Jan onwards) but normally its only 0.5m and there is only one line of breaking waves.
At low tide there are sand bars off the point that produce nice waves around 300-400 hundred meters from the shore.

This spot is for begginers and professionals, it is best for General riding, some soft waves. Tide changes every 6-hours and shifts by 1-hour per day. The wind blows side shore from the right, sometimes side onshore. Cumbuco is 45min drive from the international airport of Pinto Martins in Fortaleza.

Barra da Tijuca is the longest beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with 12 Km of clean and tropical green water. If you have a flat in Barra de Tijuca or you go out early and intend to stay here the whole day, you will appreciate the first few kilometers of the beach which are filled with bars and seafood restaurants, so you can have a snack in one of the breaks, gulping up some saltwater and put some fluid back into the body. Believe us, fresh water never tastes this good, as after hours of kitesurf!

In addition to restaurants, you’ll find several “barracas” (in Portuguese) or tents, which are simply food and drink stalls on the beach. It’s calm on weekdays, and crazy on hot summer weekends from December to March. An extension of Barra da Tijuca Beach is called Praia do Pepê. At Praia do Pepê is the place for kitesurf. Championships (national and international) are often held at Barra da Tijuca many times during the year.

You can get to Barra da Tijuca beach in many ways. The majority of buses don’t pass the whole beach extension, so if you want to go by bus, it will leave you on the backstreet and you have to walk a little bit. There are some vans that go to Barra as well, but if you want a safe bet, the best option is to take a cab, since it’s a very big place. If you want to take a buss: Buses from downtown to Barra : 175, 179 (Alvorada) Vans: they pass through Copacabana beach, Ipanema, Leblon and downtown Rio. Just stick your hand out when they approach you and they’ll pick you up.
